Battle against a true hero synthesia
Just like regular loops, you can specify a number of times to loop after it as well. If you don't know about them, label loops allow you to preface a loop with a parentheses and number, and then recall it later instead of having to redefine a bunch of notes. Now, changing topics completely, while I see you did some optimizing, there's still a lot of patterns that could be looped, from a quick glance, so I'd suggest double-checking those. This can help make it sound a bit less flat, even in cases where the original doesn't have panning. Their volume also seems to be a bit loud, although this might be able to be mitigated by panning the two channels comprising the chord slightly away from each other so y9 for the top and y11 for the bottom, for example. The last two notes of the phrase around 2:13 and 2:30 also sound incorrect.Īround 1:56, the trumpets are an octave too low. Also, you're missing the big volume boost right before the trumpet part. I know the original's choir is a bit hard to hear, but it's moreso in the volume rather than the fade-in. They also cut out too quickly, which results in the song sounding emptier than it should be.Īround 1:47, I feel like, once again, the choir sample is a bit too much of a lead one for this song, but also, the fade-in for it is a bit too long on the shorter notes, which results in them barely being heard. The square wave (and at parts, the piano) should be the lead, while the strings are an accompaniment often complimenting the main melody with a fade in long enough that they usually only come in after the square wave has played its note.Īround 1:37, I believe the notes in the guitar chords are more or less entirely off, with a few of them missing, so I'd double-check that. Overall, I would say you should mix the strings in better so they're not as prominent. Either that, or they need a much slower fade-in. The last few notes of it around 1:08 sound like they're extra, but I'm not entirely sure if it's a question of mixing, sample choice, octave, or some combination of this. I would suggest either using a cello or guitar for this instead. As for the overall mixing, the triangle should be louder.Īround 0:34, the choir should be a cello or other string instrument that's a bit lower than the violin you used, one with a long fade-in for the first note, and a shorter one for all the rest.Īround 0:47, the guitar in the back seems to be completely absent, though it seems to kick back in somewhere around 0:55 as a string. It could also use a bit of an extra punch it as well, either by using different samples as the source, or by adding an extra octave of them on top of each other, or something else. Instead of using up two channels to have the square wave and piano play the same melody, you might be better off creating a layered sample of the two instead, since this gives you a whole extra channel to play with.
While there's only so much you can do in 8 channels, I still feel like it's a very noticeable omission. The intro is mostly fine, but I believe you would be better off using a quieter choir sample to capture the same atmospheric/background feel of the original, rather than the loud and prominent Chrono Trigger choir.Īround 0:19, I believe the choir/strings are missing, along with what I believe are very subtle tubular bells or something of the sort. The biggest thing I notice is that a lot of the song simply doesn't pack the same punch as the original, especially starting around 0:19, and I would primarily say this is because of your sample choices, as well as mixing. However, I believe it could use a bit of work before being accepted. I thought about posting to the forum first but it doesn't seem very active compared to the file area.įor a first port, this is off to a good start. Of course I'm open to critique and want to make it better. I didn't want to sacrifice most of the samples or the echo effect. It's heavily sampled and uses a super-slim sample group, so you may note some stock music/SFX missing on the level where you use this music but when I tried it wasn't too bad. I wanted to hear this song with Chrono Trigger instruments (as well as Reunited, but I'm not sure if people will ever use that in a SMW hack). My first SPC submission to the site - I am still learning this tool.
